Gaharu Guest House in Temangan Kelantan

Hello everyone,

Are you planning to visit Kelantan and looking for an opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and rural way of living? Then you would enjoy staying at a new Guest House cum Homestay called the Gaharu Guest House or Rumah Rehat Gaharu in the Malay language.

Gaharu Guest House is located in a small town called Temangan, in the district of Machang. It is only a 15 minute drive by car from either Machang or another town called Tanah Merah. The distance from Kota Bharu is 65 KM or about 60 minutes away by car.

If you visit the Gaharu Guest House website, you will find information on the directions to get there, the incredibly low rental rates and the descriptions of the area and other related links.

See you there.
Abdullah.

This Map Website shows you maps of most places in the world. They may be useful if you need to see a quick layout of a town, province or country of your interest. It is an interactive map, and you can find maps of other location from this same site by navigating through the menu.

Travel and Peace Organisations

Hello every one,

Yes I am back, thank Allah I am able to continue with this blog. It has been a few months since I wrote my last blog. You will know that I have been busy with very many family festivities, attending and preparing for family member weddings. All this drained my energy and has an effect on my health. So I took some rest. Everyone should take a rest when he needs one.

I wish to share with you that one of my interests is travel. I belong to a few travel and peace organisations. One such peace organisation is SERVAS. Members of SERVAS try to achieve peace and understanding among its members through becoming hosts to travelling guests. This organisation was founded about 50 years ago by an American who was then travelling in Europe. He started a network of members consisting of hosts and travellers, who through travelling, try to understand each other's cultures and peculiarities; and try to achieve peace through this understanding. If you are interested to know more about this organisation, please go to the SERVAS link. This organisation now has members all over the world. If you want to be a member, you need to be interviewed by an officiated member. This is to enable the organisation to know you better and to inform you what are your responsibilities in being a member.

Another travel club that I belong to is Global Free Loaders. This travel club was initiated by an Australian who loves travelling and wanting to meet more local people during his travels. This is a deaper experience than the normal superficial hotel stay and tour packages in bus coaches. In the Global Free Loaders website, one may apply to be a member and then find hosts in most parts of the world.

A young German boy who was bitten by the travel bug after completing his one year AFS student exchange experience in the USA, started another travel club called the Hospitality Club. Now this organisation has grown and members can be found all over the world. One can join this organisation through its Hospitality Club website. You just need to apply your membership through the internet, and membership is free.

Yesterday I received an email from a fellow member of Hospitality Club from Kuala Lumpur. He informed me that he and a foreigner guest of his will be travelling to the states of Kelantan and Terengganu this December. He requested that I supply him with information on suitable hotels, restaurants and places of interests in Kota Bharu Kelantan and also in Terengganu. First I need to do some research on hotels, restaurants and places of interest in Kota Bharu Kelantan and in Terenganu. After that I shall send him the information. I shall share the results of my effort with you in my coming postings.

Don't forget to come back, and I hope to see you soon on this blog.

From Abdullah Che Tengah, Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia.

New Hotline For Tourists

News from The Star, June 8, 2006, page N28:

Kuala Lumpur:
A new tourism information hotline has been lunched to cater for the influx of tourists during Visit Malaysia Year 2007.
Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the new infoline, 1-300-88-5050 would replace the existing 1-300-88-5776.
"The new infoline starts operating today but the old one will sill be operational until Dec 31," he said.
The new infoline has 21 call centres but the old one only connects the caller to four call centres in Kuala Lumpur - at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), KL International Airport, Malaysian Tourism Centre and KL Sentral."
The infoline will provide as much information as possible to foreign tourists, and our front liners are all well-trained," Tengku Adnan said after launching the new infoline at the PWTC here yesterday.
He said the call centres operates from 11 Tourism Malaysia offices and 12 Tourism Information Centres.
"To commemorate the 5oth anniversary of the country's independence next year, we have chosen 5050 as the last four digits of the infoline."
Tengku Adnan also said the ministry would hire multi-lingual operators during peak holiday seasons to cater to non-English speaking tourists.
He said the call centres would operate from 8am to midnight, adding all calls would be diverted to a mobile line after midnight.
"One officer will be on duty answering calls after midnight.
On another matter, Tengku Adnan said the ministry would soon launch its own real-time statistics on tourists arrivals, as it was getting the data directly from the immigration Department now.

Kelantan, From Backwaters To Tourist Haven

Yes, Malaysia is getting ready for the Visit Malaysia Year 2007. Kelantan State, not wanting to be left behind, is making preparations for the arrival of tourists for the Visit Kelantan Year 2007.

The following is an article taken from the New Sunday Times (Malaysia) June 4, 2006 Edition, written by Sulaiman Jaafar.

KOTA BHARU:
Kelantan's image of a conservative tourism backwaters is changing.

Industry players are reinventing tour and travel packages to transform the State from just a stopover to Perhentian Island and a place to shop for cheap and imitation goods at the bazaars of Rantau Panjang and Pengkalan Kubor border towns.

Besides the usual city and countryside tours, many operators are targeting local and foreign travelers who have a thirst for adventure, river rafting and ecotourism.

The State authorities are also on an aggressive drive to promote Kelantan overseas in an effort to increase the number of visitors from the 3.5 million recorded last year.

Kelantan Tourism Information Centre (TIC) offifials have so far gone to Dubai and Singapore and will be heading to China soon.

TIC manager Mohd Arif Mohd Nor said the response to the promotional drives was good, especially in the island republic and he was confident of a 10 per cent rise this year.

"Besides the usual focus on culture, traditional handicrafts and shopping, priority is being given to ecotourism - especially at the Stong State Nature Park in Kuala Krai and Sungai Nenggiri in Gua Musang," he said.

Boasting dozens of caves, peaks and a multitiered waterfall reputed to be the highest in the region, the Stong Park is rich in flora and fauna.

Sungai Nenggiri is gaining a reputation for white-water rafting. It is also being developed as a sanctuary for the kelah (Malaysian mahseer).

Arif said TIC was in discussions with travel agencies on ways to increase promotions on the destinations and to improve the facilities.

Several other places are being high-lighted on TIC's foreign trips. These include the Buddist temples in tumpat, which has the largest reclining Buddha in Southeast Asia and one of the biggest sitting Buddhas in the region.

"Buddhist tour operators in Singapore especially, were intrigued when told about the statues as Kelantan is perceived to be an Islamic State," Arif said.

KB Backpackers Holiday Sdn Bhd managing director Nazri Hassan, whose company offers packages to Gunung Stong and Sungai Nenggiri, welcomed TIC's initiatives.

Nazri said the Gunung Stong nature park was fast making a name for itself. His company brings in an average of 200 visitors a month. They comprise mostly local students and a sizeable number of foreigners.

"With the increasing number of visitors, we need to upgrade facilities, particularly toilets at Kem Bahar, the base camp at Stong."

Nazri said the Sungai Nenggiri packages, although relatively new, are popular with student and youth groups.

Besides rafting, visitors are also taken to Orang Asli villages and a limestone cave, Gua Cha, the site of a Neolithic settlement.
